Important Travel Update

Starting in late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries will be required to obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) travel authorization before visiting the European countries requiring it. We recommend checking the official European Union ETIAS website for the most current requirements and implementation timelines.

Entry Requirements

  • Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter?
    • Yes. As of June 20, 2021, residents of the United States are allowed to enter Germany unless traveling from a virus-variant area from which entry is banned. See the list here.
  • Travelers who spent time in an RKI-designated risk area in the 10 days prior to entry must submit a digital registration on entry. As of June 13, 2021, the United States is no longer a designated risk area.
  • Is a negative COVID-19 test required for entry?
    • Yes. PCR taken within 72 hours prior to entry or rapid antigen within 48 hours.
    • The test must meet RKI criteria; airlines may not board travelers without a negative result.
  • Testing may be waived for fully vaccinated travelers (per listed vaccines) or recent recovery, unless arriving from a variant area. See official guidance for details.
  • Health screening may occur at ports of entry, including mandatory testing for certain travelers.
